Has been greeted with mixed feelings: most of the people are still proud of their new freedom but many people are hurting from the death and divisions brought about by the internal conflict. The failure so far to resolve the underlying issues is an ongoing concern and all in South Sudan live with the unease created by uncertainty. Will a lasting peace prevail or will the violence spread? In many areas crops have not been planted and people face the prospect of starvation.
In response to the crisis, international aid efforts are being increased but with the poor roads in South Sudan it is always difficult to distribute food and other supplies during the wet season.
The need for peace, healing and reconciliation among the diverse tribes in South Sudan is great. Our presence encourages the people. Our programmers make progress possible. We have not gone away. Morale is high. No-one enjoys the present uncertainty and threat of further violence but we continue to walk with the people in hopeful solidarity.
